About Barrio Nuevo
We are an independent, political, grassroots organization working with the Latin American community in Canada. We organize community development projects with the aim of building a movement of working people towards the goal of long-term societal and economic change.
History of Barrio Nuevo
Barrio Nuevo (the new neighbourhood) endeavours to overcome ingrained assumptions and expand the realm of possibilities for the Latino community. The collective seeks to raise the critical consciousness of, and about, Latino culture by organizing political, artistic and educational movements.
Barrio Nuevo was launched in 2007, born under the banner of “Pa’delante” (to move forward.) It was created to address the concern that, despite having a presence in Canada for approximately 30 years, Latinos are still significantly underrepresented in political and cultural spheres.
The group began organizing informally by hosting information sessions, community art events and political talks. These initiatives were well received by the Latino community, which spoke to need for relevant content. As a result of their affirmative community contributions, those involved with Pa’delante were invited to produce and host a radio show on Radio Voces Latinas.
They created “Barrio Nuevo” a radio show with the objective of reaching Latino youth in the city of Toronto. Popular music was used to attract these youth who were then encouraged to participate in dialogue. The show eventually evolved into “La Esquina” which continues broadcasting on a weekly basis.
One of the major themes that emerged from on-air discussions was a need for an organization with the capacity to speak to community issues. As a result, the producers took up this challenge and, along with a core group of volunteers, laid the foundation for the present-day Barrio Nuevo. Since then, they have been working to expand outreach and cultural activities in order to create positive change, encourage participation and foster a sense of potential and inclusion.
